{"id":177,"date":"2015-03-01T20:00:54","date_gmt":"2015-03-01T20:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smartstory.nz\/stories\/?p=177"},"modified":"2015-03-23T21:36:58","modified_gmt":"2015-03-23T21:36:58","slug":"a-first-at-te-rangi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smartstory.nz\/stories\/a-first-at-te-rangi\/","title":{"rendered":"A First at Te Rangi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the 1<sup>st<\/sup> of December 2014 a large group of Nelson women met at the Nelson Public Library to share their experiences of Te Rangi, a much loved surgical and maternity hospital in the central city where many Nelsonians drew their first breath.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Opened in 1915 and closed in 1966, it is Te Rangi\u2019s maternity services that were most fondly remembered. Scrumptious food, a sunny veranda, cleanly scrubbed steps and wonderfully supportive, fun-loving staff were repeated stories. The above photograph of two new mothers and two nurses, supplied by Jenny Eade of Nelson, captures Te Rangi in the late 1930s. (photo: SmartStory)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Moana Toetoe was 15 in 1958 when she started at Te Rangi as a &#8216;domestic&#8217;. It was her first job after leaving school \u2013 just a few days prior to her first shift.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI learnt a lot on that job about hard work, discipline, having a good sense of humour and even how to cook.
